Concept
The property at No.15 Nuwe Straat,
Prince Albert was bought and restored in 1999 by
South African fine artist, Sally Arnold. A new house with roof terrace
and 8m high interior volumes, in the style most suitable for hot dry
climates, was later added. The houses form a courtyard with swimming
pool and seating niche. Designed by Pretoria based architect Derick
de Bruyn, No. 15A is a modern interpretation of the original "brakdak" dwelling, setting a new benchmark for contemporary Karoo architecture.
"House Sally" was published most recently in "10 years, 100 buildings" (Bell Roberts).
A
perfect base for exploring the spectacularly beautiful region by car,
bicycle, plane or on foot. Or for writing that book or screenplay undisturbed...

Cottage
The Skuinshuis Artist’s Cottage
was built 100 years ago by farm workers, in the typical Karoo labourers’ flat-roofed
style along natural contour lines. Recently added: a new
bedroom, bathroom and two outdoor seating areas. The delightful cottage
offers cosy accommodation for a couple.
The 4 star Artist’s Cottage has been
vibrantly styled with a mix of contemporary South
African craft and design, carefully restored vintage furniture and
Sally Arnold‘s paintings. 10% of all income earned from the cottage
supports the Skuinshuis Fund, administered by the artist
since 2000 in aid of various creative projects (e.g. art classes, dance
projects) for the youth of Prince Albert.
